Jocasta - 2023

Acrylic, Emulsion, Water Colour,
Graphite & Chalk on Canvas.

"Jocasta" is the latest piece in my oeuvre, born from my desire to revisit and reimagine the more dynamic, unconstrained ‘freeflow’ style I explored in my 2016 work, "A Boy and His Dolphin." With this painting, I wanted to capture the spirit of that earlier piece—its visceral energy and bold expression—while infusing it with a fresh, more contemporary vitality, reflecting upon my evolution as an artist. I aimed to maintain a similar colour palette and stylistic approach but with the addition of newer mark making techniques and mediums.

When I began working on "Jocasta," I actively let my creativity run free. I drew from a mix of personal experiences that were happening in my life at the time, my emotions, and ideas I’d been nurturing. A key goal was to create large, expressive marks and incorporate diluted bursts of bold colour, a nod to my 2016 work.

I experienced some trepidation as I dove back into painting after nearly a year-long hiatus. However, I approached the process with an open mind, letting the artwork unfold as organically as possible, hoping to capture some of the raw essence of my earlier work. I believe "Jocasta" hits that proverbial sweet spot between detailed, abstract, and boldly expressive. It's a storm of creativity—a complex, evocative piece that carries the same untamed vivacity as my 2016 opus, whilst exhibiting more refined technique.
