BOBO - 2019

Acrylic & Emulsion Paint
on Canvas.

“Bobo” holds a special place in my oeuvre. It stands as one of a pair with its sister painting, “Coluh,” and is one of my largest creations to date, marking a significant leap in scale for me. What makes this piece particularly unique is the unconventional process I used in making it – painting with LED lights that bathed my entire studio space in shifting hues of primary red, green, and blue. This approach allowed me to paint with less inhibition, as I wasn’t entirely aware of the exact colours I was using, bringing spontaneity to the work.

When I started this piece, I adopted a "f*ck it" mindset. I didn’t have any grand intentions; I just wanted to see where the process would take me. Early on, though, I found myself drawn to exploring form-making and became fascinated with creating depth on the canvas, regardless of the colours paired, which I was blind to. I also experimented with new brush techniques, aiming to create in a more visceral and expressive way.

This piece represents a significant shift from my earlier style, marking my transition into a more expressionist approach. While my signature pareidolia-led style remains a strong presence, it blends with newer, rounded, and more dimensional brush strokes. The result is a vivacious, energetic, and colourful artwork that reflects this marked evolution in my creative practice.
